Hands-on

Your first real change

You'll copy our team manual to your computer, edit your own card, send it back, and watch the live page change.

Why a repo

Repo is short for repository.

A project folder with a memory

A repo is a folder of files that remembers every change: who made it, when, and why. The shared copy lives on GitHub.

Many people, one project

Eight of us can work on the same project at once. Each person works on their own copy and sends changes back, and a tool called git combines them.

You can undo

Every saved change is kept, so a mistake is never permanent.

Look before you send

Before every push, preview your change on your own computer. You catch mistakes while only you can see them. Make it a habit from day one.

Sending a change can publish it

For the team manual, sending a change to GitHub also updates the live site, usually within a minute. Seeing your change appear that fast is part of what we're practicing.

Four words

You'll ask Claude to do all four in plain English. You never type them yourself.

Clone

Copy the repo from GitHub to your computer. You do this once.

Pull

Fetch the latest changes from GitHub. Do it before you edit anything.

Commit

Save a labeled snapshot of your changes on your computer.

Push

Send your saved changes to GitHub.

The steps

Copy each prompt, swap in your own details where you see capital letters, and say it to Claude Code.

Open Team Manual
Step 1

Sign in to GitHub

Our team manual lives on GitHub, and you're already in the Firefly Partners org there. Claude Code works on a copy in a folder on your computer, so your computer needs to prove it's you. Windows only: install Git first, then quit and reopen the Claude app. Macs already have it.

Then say this to Claude Code Check whether the GitHub CLI is installed and install it if not. Then sign me in to GitHub through the browser and set up git to use that sign-in.
What you should seeA browser window opens with a short code. Approve it, then come back to Claude Code.
Step 2

Make a Claude Code folder

In Finder (Mac) or File Explorer (Windows), create a folder called Claude Code inside your home folder. Then open the Code tab, choose Local, click Select folder, and pick Claude Code. We use the home folder, not Documents, because Documents often syncs to iCloud or OneDrive and that can cause trouble for git projects.

Step 3

Clone the team manual

Say this to Claude Code Clone https://github.com/fireflypartners/team-manual into this folder and tell me when it's done.
What you should seeDepending on your permission mode, Claude may ask your OK before it runs a command. If it does, say yes. That's normal.
Step 4

Open the project

Start a new session in the Code tab, choose Local, and this time select the team-manual folder inside Claude Code. Then check that Claude can see the house rules.

Say this to Claude Code Read CLAUDE.md and explain the rules for this project in plain English.
Step 5

Pull the latest

Always do this before you edit.

Say this to Claude Code Pull the latest changes from GitHub.
What you should seeEither "already up to date" or a short list of what changed.
Step 6

Edit your card

Your file is your first name in lowercase, like team/kim.md. Swap the capital letters for your own details. Only edit your own file.

Say this to Claude Code Open team/YOURNAME.md. Set my role to "YOUR ROLE" and my timezone to "YOUR TIMEZONE". Replace the intro line with: "WHAT YOU'D LIKE CLAUDE TO HELP YOU WITH". Edit only my own file.
What you should seeClaude shows what changed, with a count like +3 -3. Read it to check it says what you meant.
Step 7

Add a photo (optional)

Any picture works, any shape or size. Your card crops it into a circle. Drag a picture into the message box, then say:

Say this to Claude Code Use this photo for my card.
What you should seeWithout a photo, your card shows your initials.
Step 8

Preview it on your computer

Before you send anything, look at it. A local preview is a private copy of the site that only runs on your computer, so nobody sees it but you. Opening manual.html straight from the folder won't show the cards, because the page loads the team files over the web. Claude can run a small local server that does.

Say this to Claude Code Start a local preview of this site, open it so I can see it, and tell me the address.
What you should seeAn address that starts with http://localhost. The Code tab has a built-in browser, so the site should open right inside the app. If it doesn't, paste the same address into any browser you use. Open Team Manual and find your card. If Claude says it needs to install something, say yes or ask us.

Change something, then refresh the preview to see it. When you're done, say: Stop the preview.

Step 9

Commit and push

Say this to Claude Code Commit my change with a short, clear message, then push it to GitHub.
What you should seeClaude reports that the push went through.
Step 10

Watch the page change

Wait about a minute, then open the Team Manual page and refresh. Your card should show your role and timezone.

If something looks wrong

Find what you're seeing, then do what it says.

The push was rejected

Someone else pushed first. That's normal when eight people work at once.

Say this to Claude Code Pull again, then push.

The preview is blank or has no cards

Make sure you opened the address that starts with http://localhost, not the file itself. Ask Claude:

Say this to Claude Code The preview isn't showing my card. Check that the preview is running and tell me the address.

My card didn't change

Give it a minute and refresh the page. Still nothing? Ask Claude:

Say this to Claude Code Check whether my push went through.

Claude keeps asking permission

That's your permission mode asking before each step. Approve each one, or switch modes with the selector next to the send button. We'll show you on the call.

GitHub says I don't have access

Run step 1 again. If it still fails, tell us on the call. You need to be a member of the Firefly Partners GitHub org.
